The garment is treated here the way a wall is treated in the Architects work: as a surface with a volume behind it. The fleece is cut wide through the chest and dropped at the shoulder so that the body inside it is described rather than displayed. What you read walking toward you is a shape, not a figure.

Everything is one colour, and the colour was chosen for its refusal to signal anything. Warm grey against a warm grey ground. The eye has nothing to catch on and so begins to read proportion instead — the length of the sleeve against the length of the torso, the width of the leg against the width of the hem.

There is a single red stitch at the cuff. It is the only incident in the piece, and it exists to prove the rule: in a garment with no other event, one deliberate mark carries the entire weight of authorship. Remove it and the work is anonymous. That is the whole function of the detail.
