Essay

A cafe is the last genuinely public room. Not a lobby, which moves you along, and not a home, which requires an invitation — a room you may occupy for the price of a small thing, for as long as you behave. Casa Cafe treats that permission as the material to be designed.

The plan is organised around the threshold rather than the counter. Where a room lets you in, it also lets you hesitate; the patio holds that hesitation, half outside and half committed, before the interior closes around you. Every surface is chosen to survive being touched by strangers.

Restraint here is functional, not stylistic. A public room that asserts too much taste makes its occupants into guests. The intention was the opposite — to build something quiet enough that the people inside it become the content, and the architecture reads as the pause around them.

The last genuinely public room.
