Cubes

The cube is the least interesting form available and therefore the most useful one to test with. It has no orientation, no hierarchy, no preferred face. Whatever a study of cubes discovers cannot be credited to the shape, because the shape contributes nothing.

What it isolates is relation. Move two identical volumes apart and the gap between them becomes the subject; overlap them and the seam does. Nothing in the arrangement is expressive on its own, and everything about it is legible the moment a second volume enters the frame.

Removing the planting from the ground plane was the decisive edit. With vegetation the composition read as a garden; without it, the volumes have nothing to be softened by and must hold the space on the strength of their intervals alone.
