The most powerful element in the image is the one that will not be there in an hour. A hard diagonal of shadow crosses a rendered wall, dividing it into two materials that are in fact one. By evening the wall will be uniform again and nothing will have changed about it.

This is the argument the study makes: that a substantial part of what a building offers is temporary, unownable, and impossible to specify. You can commission the render and the aperture. You cannot commission the shadow. It arrives on its own schedule and leaves without asking.

Designing for the ephemeral means designing the conditions rather than the effect — the depth of a reveal, the angle of an opening, the coarseness of a surface that will hold a raking light. The work is to build the instrument. The performance is not yours.
