Landscape — Form Study  ·  2025

Essay

A dune is a solid that behaves like a liquid on a longer timescale. It holds a precise form, and that form is the visible record of a force it cannot resist. Dune borrows the logic rather than the shape: mass arranged by something other than the designer's preference.

Working this way means surrendering the part of the process that feels most like authorship. The section is set by an angle of repose rather than a decision. What the eye reads as sculptural is closer to a diagram — the shape a material takes when it is allowed to find its own limit.

The study asks whether a building can be shaped by a condition instead of a taste. Not mimicry of a natural form, which is decoration, but the adoption of its rule. The result looks inevitable, which is the quality that no amount of styling has ever been able to fake.

A solid that behaves like a liquid on a longer timescale.
